Inconsistent color between batches is one of the most common complaints in paint and ink production. The problem usually isn't a single cause but the sum of several small factors. Here are the five most common ones.
1. Raw-material lot variation
Pigments and colorants from different lots can differ slightly in shade or strength. Incoming QC on raw materials catches this early, before it reaches production.
2. Weighing / dosing errors
A small error in the mixing ratio can create a visible difference, especially for deep colors or multi-component formulas. Accurate weighing and automated dosing systems reduce the risk.
3. Differences in grinding & dispersion
How well a pigment is dispersed directly affects color and strength. Different grind times, speeds and equipment can produce different colors from the same formula.
4. Process conditions
Temperature, time and cure/drying conditions all affect the final color. Standardising the process between batches is essential for consistent color.
5. Inconsistent measurement
Sometimes the actual color is stable but the measurement isn't — different instrument, angle or operator. Using one measurement procedure and a calibrated instrument removes this factor.
